San Francisco

In the summer of 2009 and 2010, I was on tour with a music festival called The Vans Warped Tour on the west coast of the United States and Canada. Today, we visit a day in August of 2009. I was in San Francisco, with a day off from the tour, just hanging out in the city. I wasn’t in the city long enough to make any friends unfortunately, but the stunning landscapes and neighbourhoods that the city offered were plenty to offer my 18 year old mind.

Situated in northern California, nearby cities include Oakland and San Jose. It’s commonly known at the “City By The Bay” and with gorgeous bridges (the “Bay Bridge” as highlighted in this post and the infamous Golden Gate Bridge), steep hills abound and several islands, including Alcatraz, Treasure Island, and the adjacent Yerba Buena Island, and a small portion of Alameda Island, Red Rock Island, and Angel Island. Also included are the uninhabited Farallon Islands, 27 miles (43 km) offshore in the Pacific Ocean. The mainland portion is surrounded on three sides by water!

A few of the highlights shown below include The Oakland “Bay Bridge” and the pier nearby, beautiful rolling hills, old-school public transportation, and The Ferry Building along the Embarcadero.

The photo of the day today is of The Oakland “Bay Bridge”  and as part of Interstate 80, it’s the direct road route between San Francisco and Oakland. The bridge consists of two main spans of roughly equal length, a western span connecting downtown San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island and an eastern span connecting the island to Oakland. The main part of the western span is a suspension bridge while the main part of the eastern span is a cantilever bridge. While the Golden Gate Bridge is synonymous with the city of San Francisco, I urge you to give this, as well as all other bridges around the world another shot!

  4. Great photos. Sadly California is still on my travel to-do list. I hope to make it there one day sooner than later.
