Sweet 16 in Seattle

Sweet 16 in Seattle

Forever a free spirit, my parents asked me what I wanted to do for my 16th birthday and my response was to go to Seattle instead of having a party. With a little bit of convincing, I even got them to take me all the way to Aberdeen, Washington, the hometown of Kurt Cobain, singer of 90’s grunge band, Nirvana.

A woman never reveals her age, and although I usually think that’s bogus, you can use your imagination this time to figure out the year this photograph was taken, and with what camera, although it is indeed a digital photograph.

With the stunning North-West clouds being accented by the sunset on that February evening, I captured the skyline (cityscape? I don’t actually know the difference) with the infamous protruding Space Needle being the prominent point of interest. I believe we were stuck in traffic (typical of Seattle) on the highway and I took this through the window of my parent’s car.

Downtown Vancouver Skyline from Lonsdale Quay

Downtown Vancouver Skyline from Lonsdale Quay

A bit of fish-eye, my hometown an a gorgeous sky makes Krystal a happy girl. The flare adds to the effect of the lens in a weird and unexpected way that I like.

This was taken in November of 2011 and I’m itching to show some newer photos, but unfortunately, I’m building an archive of photos that I can’t use. Nice one, Nikon. Release a fantastic camera that I’ve fallen in love with, but make sure that no Adobe product is compatible with it (yet… although it’s been a few months now :/). No Lightroom, no Photoshop… My only choice is to switch to Capture NX2, but being that it’s an unfamiliar program, it’s time-consuming for a simple edit.

Anyways, enough about my camera woes! I’m sure it will be worth it once the technology catches up. Enjoy this shot of Vancouver in the mid-afternoon in the fall. It is taken from the giant “Q” that looms above Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver across the water from downtown. The amount of time I spent there in my youth will always be reflected in my photos, but this shot seems to capture it in a way I have yet to match.

Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland has one of the most amazing landscapes one can hope for in such a sizable city. From the hills and mountains to the ocean to the north. Every time I was on any sort of hill or on top of a tall building, I wanted to check out the skyline and bask in it’s beauty. The shot below was taken on top of Camera Obsura, which is just next to the entrance of Edinburgh Castle. Being in the UK, it’s not surprising that the majority of the time I was in the city, clouds covered the sky, but I like the mood it adds in this shot.

The view from Camera Obscura in Edinburgh, Scotland in early September of 2011.

Toronto

In August of 2012, I spent some time in southern Ontario and with that comes the capitol of the province, Toronto. I discovered a random lookout point while driving around and getting lost in the city, and I spent a breakfast and a dinner here on different days. This photograph with the swan and the heavy cover of haze/smog seemed to capture a dramatic side of the city in the wee hours of the summer morning.Image
