Montréal

While on the subject of the gorgeous art on the buildings in the city of Montréal, I thought I’d show a bit of the contrast. In the previous post (https://dailyjaunt.wordpress.com/2012/10/24/montreal/), I showed a side of the city’s art that is represented in a very rebellious way. Commonly, it’s thought of more as graffiti and “defemation” of public property. This is not necessarily always the case, but the style represents those ideals, along with many other. The indivuduals choose, of course, whether they subscribe to any of them. You will find a lot of words, messages or “tags” in this kind of street art. Sometimes it’s political, other times it is anarchist and every so often, it’s an alter-ego that someone has created for his or herself.

Another style of street art found in Montréal is a more traditionally artistic style, with few letters/writing. The message is the image, whether it’s people, animals, arcitechture, objects, fantasy… Anything you can draw is included! Often with this style, you see shading and definition in the images, but they tend to look more 2 dimentional in comparison with some style of graffiti art, intended to seem 3D. In Montréal, I noticed that the graffiti style was found a lot more in common areas, like parking lots, or buildings near parks or Metro stations. The more refined art is often found on main streets, be it doors of a store or the side of an apartment building. The most common spot, with often the most intricate pieces, were found on corners leading to an alleyway. The photograph below is a great example of that, found in the Plateau if memory serves me correctly.

Montréal

One of my favourite things about the immensely cultural city of Montréal is the sheer amount of graffiti and street art on almost every street. I took the below photograph the second night that I was in the city and honestly, if it wasn’t so early in the pictures, I might have completely over-looked it because I took so many pictures of the fabulous art lining the buildings around town. Many of the images are closer to a massive canvas painting rather than graffiti, so to call it anything but art would be an injustice. No matter whether you’re into visual arts such as painting, drawing, sculpting, photography, or any other type of art like music, theater, or dance… Montréal is the place to be in the summer time!

On the streets of Montréal, a common sight is the graffiti, street art and paintings that line the many buildings. This was a parking lot, which is where you are likely to find images closer to graffiti. On the sides of restaurants or stores, especially on corners to alleys, you’ll see the more artistic and canvas style images.

Dublin

Along my travels, I’ve seen and capture much street art, especially on the island of Ireland, both in the Republic of and the Northern area. In Dublin, I took a photograph of this bit of art and I love the way it turned out, with the sharp detail and stark contrast.

Cambridge

During my most recent visit to the UK, I decided to stop in to visit a friend I had made at a festival in California the year before. She lived in Royston with her son and in nearby Cambridge, I had an experience I will never forget! Take a look at the photo below.Yes, what you’re seeing is correct. The neck of a guitar sticking out of a trash bin. Playing that neck is the arm of a man. A man who is inside the garbage, playing, as well as singing. By far the most original busker I have ever encountered!

Cambridge, England. Busker singing and playing guitar in a trash bin. I was shocked and amazed!

Vehicles – Paris

For the first 7 days of each month, I like to do a photo-essay with a theme picked by my audience. This month, it will be vehicles. Categorized by city in alphabetical order, Paris is the setting for day 5! The topic for the photo is the traffic again, but this time, the vehicles are moving in a round-about, which was one of the most scary experiences the first time I was in a taxi-cab in that environment. You’ll notice there’s no street paint / lines to indicate where each vehicle should be… It’s feels like utter chaos, synchronized. In the background, you’ll notice a famous monument erected by Napolean, the Arc de Triomphe. The overcast weather made for a beautiful sky to contrast the busy street.

Vehicles – London

For the first 7 days of each month, I like to do a photo-essay with a theme picked by my audience. This month, it will be vehicles. Categorized by city in alphabetical order, the next photo I chose was in London. One of the most typically British vehicle’s found in London would have to be the iconic red double-decker busses. This night-shot taken back in the summer of ’08 takes me back to those bustling streets!

Vehicles – Glasgow

In August of 2011, I was in Glasgow. A friend of mine who lives in Aberdeen, Scotland came down to the city to hang out with me for the day. As we were walking about, we stumbled upon a movie set where I saw this military vehicle and took a photograph. As with the rest of this week, for the first 7 days of each month, I like to do a photo-essay with a theme picked by my audience. This month, it will be vehicles. Going through my archives, I felt I had to include this snapshot!

Köln

Köln is a city dear to my heart in the west of Germany. Along with my aunt and an uncle, my mother has quite a few cousins who live in and near the city. In English, people call in Cologne, but I prefer the German spelling! In my most recent visit in the summer of 2011, as usual, I spent a lot of time with my family. I was on a majorly tight schedule, but it was a blast!

I spent a lot of time driving around with my aunt and a couple of my second or third cousins and in the picture I have for you lovely people today, I was blasting through the city’s beautiful center and catching a glimpse of gorgeous architecture all over the place. The picture I chose seemed to capture a beautiful European essence within the cramped street and gloomy sky.

Köln (Cologne), Germany among the cramped streets.

My new format with voting is to stick it on the bottom of posts for the last 7 days of the month. If you haven’t already voted, please do so!

What would you like to see as a theme for the photographs posted in the first week of May? This month’s options are:

–       Aboard Transportation

–       Bodies of Water

–      Vehicles

VOTE NOW! Whichever has the most votes by 11:59pm, Monday, April 30th wins and for the first 7 days of May, my photographs will be a photo-essay in that theme. (If there is a tie, whichever had the most votes first will be chosen.)
